After the ceremony, Dicks met with the commanding general of MFR New Orleans, Lieutenant General Jack W. Bergman and said, “It is a distinct honor to be invited to such an important ceremony. The culmination of a successful military career is something that we must always pay tribute to and Sgt. Maj. Cummings’ service to our nation must forever be remembered and praised. I feel privileged to be in attendance at such a special and traditional Marine ceremony to honor this gallant Marine.”
Sgt. Maj. Cummings retired after more than 30 years of military service. Some of his previous assignments included the Marine Light Helicopter Squadron 167 at Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C. and the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. During his career he was also deployed to the Persian Gulf for Operations “Desert Shield” and “Desert Storm.”
In his departing comments, Sgt. Maj. Cummings told those in attendance, “We live in the greatest country on the planet; your dedicated service will allow her to continue to be free and for all Americans to pursue their dreams, not only for themselves but also for their children. As Americans, we must always respect and remember those who protect our families, our homes, our lives, and our freedoms.”
Sgt. Maj. Davis comes to MFR from the 4th Marine Logistics Group. His previous assignments include time spent at the 2nd Forward Area Air Defense Battery at Cherry Point, N.C.; he was a Marine Security Guard at the American Embassies in Beirut, Lebanon, and Madrid, Spain; as well as a detachment commander at the American Consulate General, Calcutta, India.
