Kidz Can for Challenge

Kidz Can H.Q in Elsternwick will be filled with laughter and fun as they host a very special afternoon for Challenge member’s, some of whom are too sick from cancer treatment to risk exposure to other children.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Aug 26, 2008 – Kidz Can H.Q in Elsternwick (formerly known as Mum’s & Tots) will be filled with laughter and fun.  However, this is no ordinary group of kids because this week the centre’s director Marcelle Duhamel is hosting a very special afternoon for Challenge member’s, some of whom are too sick from cancer treatment to risk exposure to other children and often miss out on interaction with other kids. Kidz Can HQ has kindly opened their doors to allow these kids to enjoy some much needed playtime!

It’s hard to smile when you’re being treated for cancer. But being a member of Challenge helps get these kids (and parents!) through those tough days in the ward. Challenge Playgroup, which is held weekly, was developed to allow two to five-year-old members the opportunity to mix with other kids in a safe, supportive and stimulating environment. Kidz Can H.Q is a magical, fun-filled environment where kids experience a program like no other. They pride themselves on their loving, nurturing and very professional learning environment which is perfect for a day out for Challenge’s littlest members!

Because of the increased risk of infection during treatment, patients are unable to attend community crèches and kindergartens, limiting their interaction with other kids.  Knowing that Challenge Playgroup is only attended by other Challenge families, who face the same health risks, and are very conscious of not attending even with a cold, means that parents can feel very safe and relaxed about attending while their child is having treatment.

In addition to Ms Duhamel kindly donating the centre and program for the afternoon, the Elsternwick business owner has also managed to secure toys for each and every child as well as a special treat for the Mum’s. Local businesses have shown exceptional generosity offering coffee’s, balloons, toys, gifts and donations to Challenge. Ms Duhamel has been inundated with generous local support “It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to help these families at a time when they need it most. To see how much it means for these kids to be able to play in a safe environment and interact with other children is such a joy and the support from local businesses has just been phenomenal” Ms Duhamel said.

Challenge Playgroup also provides a great opportunity for mums and dads to meet and discuss common issues, and to provide much-needed support to one another.

Now in its 25th year, Challenge strives to improve the day to day lives of families such as these and provide them with experiences, skills and self-confidence to embrace life and move forward on their journey. Opportunities as simple as being able to attend Playgroup with kids in similar circumstances can be just what the doctor ordered.
