Accompanying the resources boom has been a resurgence in exploration, and massive mine, infrastructure and port development.
Most of this activity is taking place away from the big cities, in regional and often remote areas.
IIR Conferences, which runs regular annual mining conferences, has taken the deliberate step of locating key conferences in the regions, close to where the mines are being worked.
“Conference delegates appreciate being where the action is and seeing at first hand how wealth generation is transforming towns,” said IIR conference manager Richard Beattie. “It’s all part of the conference experience.
“The events also provide an opportunity to showcase regional cities to the rest of Australia and the world, as we often have international delegates and speakers.”
Forthcoming conferences in the 2008 Regional Mining Series are Mining the Territory, Darwin (14-15 October); Mining the Isa, Mt Isa (17-18 November); and Mining South Australia, Whyalla (3-4 December).
Conferences have already been held in Broome, Kalgoorlie and Karatha in Western Australia; and Strahan, Tasmania and Townsville, Queensland.
“Delegates need to book early as accommodation can often be tight, as the mining boom sucks in armies of workers and places huge demands on existing facilities,”
