TIP #1 - SHOP AROUND!
Your local Insurance agent down the street might not have the best deal. In most markets there are 3 to 5 “major” Health Insurance companies , compare the rates for all of them with comparable benefits and deductibles.
TIP #2 - RAISE YOUR DEDUCTIBLE!
The days of $250 to $500 deductibles are long gone. It is no longer cost effective to take low deductibles, most consumers find the best value in the $2000 and above deductible range.
TIP #3 - DITCH THE CO-PAYS!
Office visit “co pays” can be an expensive feature that might not pay off. Most office visit co pays only cover “consultation”
TIP #4 - PUT HEALTH FIRST - DENTAL AND VISION SECOND.
Remember a good affordable Health Insurance plan is FAR more important than dental or vision, where costs are nominal compared to catastrophic health situations. You can always pick up a stand alone dental or vision plan at any time down the road - most are limited and have waiting periods anyhow.
TIP #5 - GO ADVANCED - RESEARCH “HSA” HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS
Complex high deductible plan that mixes catastrophic coverage with tax advantage savings accounts. Possibly the lowest rate overall when you factor in tax advantages. This is not for the short term buyer or those not willing to do a little extra research and homework. HSA plans have no office visit co pays and generally no RX until your deductible is met. HSA plans offer lower premiums (in most cases) and huge tax advantages. Recommended for the SELF EMPLOYED and LONG TERM BUYER.
