Aug. 23, 2008 - PRLog -- Hermosa Beach, CA – The Hermosa Beach Soccer Club (www.HermosaBeachSoccerClub.com) today extended congratulations to Redondo Beach native and 2008 Women’s Soccer Olympic gold medalist, Shannon Boxx.

Boxx played youth club with the Torrance United Waves from 1988-'94, helping the team to regional titles in 1993 and '94, earning tournament MVP honors both years.  Shannon attended South Torrance High School from 1991 to 1995 and was selected as a Parade High School All-American in 1995.  She attended the University of Notre Dame from 1995 to 1999 and was a member of the Soccer America All-Freshman Team in 1995 and an All-Big East selection in 1995, 1996 and 1997.  Shannon helped Notre Dame to its only NCAA women's soccer title in 1995 and earned the Big East Scholar-Athlete Award in 1998.  Shannon currently holds the school record for career games played with 101.  She graduated from Notre Dame with psychology and African American studies degrees.  Shannon played for women's club Ajax of Los Angeles in 1994 when she was in high school and in 2000 and 2005.  Shannon played with the Boston Renegades in 1999 and spent some time with Saarbrucken of the German women's Bundesliga in 1999 to 2000.

Shannon was drafted in the 3rd round and 19th overall in the 2001 inaugural draft by the San Diego Spirit, where she played her first two WUSA seasons.  She was traded to the New York Power from the San Diego Spirit on Sept. 30, 2002 and had her best WUSA season in 2003, starting all 21 games and scoring one goal with the Power.  She was named to the All-WUSA First-Team and named to the WUSA All-Star Team.

“The Olympics provides memories for both athletes and fans.  What makes the Olympics even more memorable is having the opportunity to cheer on a hometown athlete,” said Brian Dragich, HBSC President.  “As a beach community we are fortunate to consistently have standout volleyball players representing the South Bay.  But as a footballer, there is nothing more exciting than having the ability to root on a local product on sports’ greatest stage.”

“Boxxy has many more years of national team play in her.  When she is ready to hang up the national team boots we’ll have a jersey with her name on it,” said HBSC Founder Jesse Torres.

The Hermosa Beach Soccer Club extends its gratitude to its generous sponsors: Del Amo Construction (DelAmoConstruction.com), Elliott/Drinkward Construction (ElliottDrinkward.com), Security Savings Bank (BankPlace.com), Coastline Steel (CoastlineSteel.com), Quality Seafood (QualitySeafood.net), SCS Engineering Inc (SCSEngineering.com) and FFI Soccer Magazine (FFISoccer.com).
