We’ve all heard the story before, the one about the large western company looking to cut costs and doing so by outsourcing some of its work to India.  But behind the scenes, another movement is taking place.

India is fast becoming a place where innovative ideas arise, and where entrepreneurial ideas originate.  No longer just letting big name companies set shop in their country, many young entrepreneurs want to be the ones who establish their own home grown brand within their own country.  And unsurprisingly, they want to expand abroad and even go global.

Along with the entrepreneurial boost, India’s economy has also recently produced many wealthy individuals.  Many of these are looking to help other local entrepreneurs follow similar dreams.  Known as “angel investors” or “business angels” – they have formed investment groups, similar to how business angels operate in the US and Europe.  Groups such as the Indian Investment Network have many investors seeking to invest in entrepreneurs based in India.

With experience and exposure to the market that the entrepreneur usually lacks, business angels can provide mentoring and advice, along with a few valuable business contacts.  These early stage investors seek to turn entrepreneurial ideas into profitable new companies, where they can potentially help generate more venture capital and grow the company further.

But its not just local investors taking notice.  With the rapid rise of globalisation, and factors such as the world wide web, many foreign investors have noticed that India may be a promising place in which to invest.  Many established businesses have looked toward India for investment opportunities, and companies like Google have become active angel investors themselves, keeping a close eye on the latest innovations.

According to the India Venture Capital Association, private equity and venture capital has felt a sharp increase over the past three years, with 2007 investment totals close to six times the total amount of investing done in 2005.  As a result, global sites like the Angel Investment Network have set up a network in India, looking to help Indian entrepreneurs connect with business angels and raise venture capital via potential investors from all around the world.

At http://www.investmentnetwork.in - Angel investors work with Indian entrepreneurs seeking investments, via this branch of the Angel Investment Network, which has since expanded into a worldwide network of websites that help angel investors connect to business entrepreneurs in India and worldwide.  A list of recent investment proposals is available at http://www.investmentnetwork.in/home/110
