FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Aug 19, 2008 – Fibre and texture are the inspiration for a new joint exhibition of local artists Jan Quinn and Freda Worsey at the Cracked Gallery at Behind the Monkey, Highgate.

Interwoven, on show from August 29 to September 11, will feature sculptural bowls in decorative and layered paper by Worsey, paired with mixed-media works in textiles, paint and canvas by Quinn.

The artists, who were introduced earlier this year, immediately noticed the similarities in the layering and intricate surface textures that are characteristic of their work.  Elaine MacLeod, owner of Behind the Monkey says ‘It was obvious to all of us that Jan and Freda approached their work in a similar, sculptural way.  We decided that exhibiting their works together would highlight not only the similarities in the techniques that both of them use, but also the difference in the outcome.  I’m very excited at the possibilities this partnership presents.’

Paper artist Worsey says ‘I began creating paper vessels as a way of expressing something else with the calligraphy that I have been working with for over 20 years. By combining decorative papers and lettering in my bowls, I feel like I’m creating containers of emotion, which will change depending on who is viewing them.’

‘I’m excited about showing my bowls with Jan’s textile works because our work is so complementary.’

Quinn, who first exhibited her works at Behind the Monkey in 2007,  is a textile artist who has recently added painting to her repertoire to create structured, mixed media pieces with a visually exciting surface detail.

‘I’ve always been inspired by textiles,’ says Quinn, ‘and it’s only lately that I have been exploring the extra interest I can add to my pieces by combining paint with layers of textiles and stitchery on canvas.’  Quinn’s abstract expressionist style paintings emphasise line and texture, using rich colour accents to highlight a neutral palette.

The Cracked Gallery, where the Interwoven exhibition will take place, is part of Behind the Monkey, a retail outlet and creative workspace featuring Australian-designed and handcrafted jewellery, art and gifts.  Quinn and Worsey’s work will be available for purchase throughout the exhibition.

Interwoven will open on Friday August 29 and continue until Thursday Saturday 11. Entry is free.
