The care sector has been independently regulated since 2002, April 2009 will see the fourth regulator come in to force. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) will be the new body. It will combine with the current inspectorate the Commission for Social Care Inspection, the Healthcare Commission and the Mental Capacity Act inspectorate in to one.
The impact of this on the care sector is that all NHS Hospitals, Care homes (private, voluntary and social service) will be inspected in exactly the same way and the inspectorate will have the power to temporarily close home and even NHS wards and wings if required.
