Michael Phelps continues to sweep the world in the living rooms of all homes, in the hearts, minds and imagination of the young to the old, of the sport fanatics to people afraid of water, of his supporters to his competitors.
What do we call this spirit?
Phelpsmanian Fever? Phelpsian Feat? The Eight Wonder of the World? The Crowning Glory of making the impossible possible?
All of the above!
One thing NOT emphasized enough in all the Phelpsian coverage stories is one very important factor in his magnificent achievement:
This story differs in all the story coverage to put more light into this fact.
Michael’s talent, discipline, dedication, determination and soaring imagination are indisputable. With that said, the other part of this incredible success story are the other factors of the success equation: Michael had 4 factors going for him during his pursuit:
1. Unconditional love and unyielding support and faith of his Mother for him.
2. The relentless support, guidance and training by and of his coach that helped push him beyond any perceived limit the boundlessness of his imagination.
3. The incredible support and performance of his teammates.
4. He had competitors and distracters that served to keep him on his toes and managed to hire up even more his imagination.
The above prove that even the best can reach a point where the next level of success calls for efforts outside of oneself. No matter the greatness of one feats and imagination, there is always a point where the next level requires efforts outside of oneself. This is clearly demonstrated in this perfect storm athletic performance. For all of Michael’s best efforts, he couldn’t have gotten to where he is now without his teammate’s support and world class performances of their own.
Michel being the ultimate athlete that he is, already proclaimed yet another goal beyond garnering more Olympic medals. He is already imagining performance of even yet higher level, he was talking of how to use his achievements to impact the face of swimming for kids. This could yet become his best performance and most difficult challenges of all. It surely would bring him gold of a different kind … the gold of children’s gratitude and admiration for his service and impact on them and their own dreams.
