The Communications Market concluded that mobile broadband had moved from a niche business market into the mainstream consumer market this year.
Research indicated that bundled laptop and mobile broadband devices are being favoured against desktop PCs in many households. However, despite obvious marketing pitches from mobile broadband ISPs advertising the benefits of logging on to the internet whilst on the move, it was found that although two million people now use mobile broadband, only around a quarter use their devices whilst on the move – the rest simply connect when they are at home.
3G broadband modem was said to have increased in popularity by an 18 per cent growth rate every month since February 2008. It was determined that if this trend continues then around 300,000 mobile broadband devices would have been sold by December this year.
Mobile Broadband Genie’s Gillian Nightingale commented on this report:
“Sales statistics found by Ofcom in their Communications Market were encouraging for all mobile broadband providers. However, as with trends in fixed-line broadband these high peaks of initial interest do tend to flatten out as the months go on – simply because there are less customers with the need to get equipped with mobile broadband for the first time.”
She continued: “Whilst the 300,000 sales mark for this December could be achievable Mobile Broadband Genie predicts that device sales will level out in the near future. This isn’t to say that it declines in popularity – simply more people will have already signed into contracts so there will be less demand.”
