The American Diabetes Association and You Can is partnering to educate the community about diabetes with the Health & Wellness Fair at the 1st Annual International Women’s Conference and Workshop on Thursday, August 28 at the Southfield Pavilion. This event will mark the first Michigan Identify Diabetes Day, (Michigan ID Day), and will provide free health services to the community.
Diabetes is a growing epidemic among the African American community and You Can is bringing it to the forefront to educate and provide resources to the metro Detroit area. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 3.2 million African Americans ages 20 years and older (or 13.3 percent) have diabetes, one-third of whom are undiagnosed. These statistics are alarming and demand change to develop a healthier society.
Acknowledging this crisis and focused on servicing the community, the Health & Wellness Fair will offer educational health workshops, free health screenings and free prescription discount cards that provide up to a 40% savings on prescription drugs. In addition, the National Black Chamber of Commerce will launch its health initiative that provides medical and dental benefits to families for less than a dollar a day. The fair will feature something for everyone, even entertainment for children. The Jazzy Kats, a children performance group, will present a fitness show training kids to choose healthy foods and lifestyles.
“Now more than ever it’s time to make a change within our community to become healthier and happier. We are thrilled to bring such positive services to metro Detroit to assist in any way possible to make people’s lives better,” said Pat McCants, You Can Founder & CEO.
Donations of $1 will go to the American Diabetes Association to support the fight against diabetes. The Health & Wellness Fair is one of many events scheduled for the 3-day International Women’s Conference & Workshop, Tuesday, August 26 – Friday, August 29. General admission is FREE and tickets to the business luncheons can be purchased by contacting the You Can office.
