PGA Championship results from The Sports HQ
In the absence of the mighty Tiger Woods at the USPGA Championship 2008, Phil Mickelson was firm favourite to lift the Wannamaker Trophy on Sunday (10th) evening, with three majors to his name and recent wins at the Northern Trust Open and Crowne Plaza Invitational. Unfortunately, the American found himself in seventh place – seven shots behind winner Padraig Harrington.
Padraig Harrington is the first European to lift the trophy since Tommy Armour in 1930 and has entered the record books as the fourth golfer in history to win PGA and Open Championships in the same year.
Harrington’s main rival, Sergio Garcia finished on 2-under 68 to share second place with Ben Curtis – despite starting the final day with a birdie and eagle seeing the Spaniard tie with Padraig after 16 holes.
Bookies favourite Phil Mickelson finished in seventh place – finishing on 4-over 284, whilst third favourite Lee Westwood, who started the championship with high expectations, failed to make the cut after a disappointing first two rounds.
Harrington who started the championship with odds of 16/1 (second favourite) has been associated with Wilson since 1998, having won 61 major championships using Wilson irons; 12 of his 14 golf clubs are Wilson branded and include the following clubs: Wilson Dd6+ driver (8-deg), Wilson FWS 5-wood (18-degree), Wilson Dh6 Hybrid Rescue Wood (19-degree); Wilson Pi7 irons (4-PW) and Wilson Tw7 wedges (55- and 60-degree).
