After another weekend peppered with news of foreclosures, redundancies and falling house prices, you may well need a strong cup of coffee to get you going this week. The big news in the hot drinks industry is that Starbucks has reported its first loss since 1992. And the word on the UK’s high street is that people just can’t afford coffee at £3 a cup in the current economic climate (The Times blog http://business.timesonline.co.uk/
The consequence of the coffee shop boom (and now possibly bust) is that our taste in coffee has changed, and although we are trying to spend less on treats and luxuries, we still want a proper cup of great tasting coffee. The sector for basic coffee is in decline, whilst fresh ground ‘coffee shop style drinks’ from office drink vending machines are in volume growth. Perhaps this signals the way forward in harder times? – so start looking for premium quality but don’t expect to pay the earth for it.
