Revolutionary cancer treatment technology is now being produced in the heart of Warwickshire.
Danfysik UK, an off-shoot of Danish company Danfysik, recently moved to the University of Warwick Science Park’s Innovation Centre, in Warwick.
The company, which employs three permanent and between two and three temporary contractors, produces parts for particle accelerators which are used to treat cancer patients.
The groundbreaking treatment has been increasingly developed over the past 20 years and works by firing the particles directly at a tumour to destroy it.
It is considered less harmful than cancer treatments such as radiotherapy as it is more precise and does not damage the surrounding tissue.
The cancer treatment technology specialists moved to the Gallows Hill site after separating from the old Oxford Danfysik team. After the split the new company was able to expand and focus solely on its specialist area of work.
Danfysik UK’s parts will be used by Siemens in particle accelerators that will be distributed worldwide.
One of the first users will be Rhön Klinikum (RKA), a leading German private hospital service provider.
Lucy Attwood, from Danfysik UK, said the company selected the Innovation Centre as its new home due to the Science Park’s central location and the reputation of the area for attracting successful businesses.
“When we were looking for a new base and we saw the Innovation Centre we knew it was the ideal base for us.
“Everywhere is easily accessible and we are surrounded by like-minded companies,” she said.
John Barnes, centre manager at the University of Warwick Science Park’s Innovation Centre, said Danfysik UK was a welcome addition to the area.
“The work Danfysik UK is doing is truly remarkable and we’re delighted they have chosen to carry it out here at the University of Warwick Science Park’s Innovation Centre.
“We believe the choice to settle here is a real indication that the Innovation Centre is fast becoming the premier location in the UK for technology firms to do business and we are sure many more will follow in their footsteps,” he said.
