By: Bob Mazza A love story combined with heart-pounding intensity that explores cultural taboos and religious conflicts between an 18-year-old Israeli Jew and a beautiful young Palestinian Muslim girl is drawing rave reviews and plenty of buzz in the dramatic new ground-breaking feature film “David and Fatima.” A private invitation-only world premiere of "David & Fatima" will be held Friday, Sept. 12 at the Laemmle Music Hall Theatre, 9036 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills. On the same date, the film will also debut at the Laemmle Quad Cinema, 34 W. 13th St., New York City, and the Laemmle Town Center (Farsi language only), 17200 Ventura Blvd., Encino, California. The film will play for at least one month. “David and Fatima” -- a controversial movie . . . “a modern day Romeo and Juliet. . . it will inspire others to re-examine a conflict that has waged for generations.” “David and Fatima” is a compelling film from Executive Producer Kari Bian’s Karim Movies Inc. with brilliant, nuanced performances by Academy Award-winner Martin Landau and the legendary Tony Curtis. Yet ultimately, like “Romeo & Juliet,” the story is fraught with danger, destiny, hope and passion. Despite their best efforts to keep their romance a secret, David and Fatima reluctantly face their families who find out the truth resulting in swift and dangerous reactions. Struggling to beat the odds as well as desperately searching for peace and hope, David and Fatima challenge not only their families, but fate itself. “David and Fatima” -- Winner of the “Mondavi Award for Peace and Cultural Understanding” With the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as the film’s backdrop, "David & Fatima” Writer/Director Alain Zaloum preferred to focus the project on a parable of sorts, and not be pre-occupied with the politics. “Like quicksand, Mid-East politics would drag any film down, which we wanted to avoid. This is an emotional journey for the characters of David and Fatima, set amidst hate and cynicism.” Zaloum, who was born in Egypt but grew up in Canada, continued, “As a filmmaker, it was important to me to embrace the hatred of families, between Arab and Jew, without being politically correct. It keeps the film honest and the characters real. We accomplished our goal and the challenges of making this film (which was shot entirely in Los Angeles), but giving it the look and realism of Jerusalem. Ultimately, we have brought to life a powerful and timeless story about romance, love, conflict and fate itself.” “David and Fatima” is produced by Karim Movies Incorporated. Kari Bian is Executive Producer, Alain Saloum is the writer/director, Tammi Sutton, the producer and Neil Lisk, the cinematographer.
