Since the duo formed in August 2007, Sweet Namaste has performed at numerous venues in the Philadelphia Tri-State area. Their music is an eclectic acoustical mix that runs the gamut of styles and genres, including many songs written by Bailey, a former Nashville singer-songwriter.
Featuring a repertoire that is both impressive and diverse, a typical Sweet Namaste show consists of Sue's original material, spiced with storytelling and humor, and supplemented by covers ranging from Bonnie Rait, Cheryl Wheeler, and Jonathan Edwards, to Tuck and Patti, the Beatles, and 1940s swing (often complete with swing dancing). Robin often joins the fun, playing harmonica with one hand while using the other to scoop up an audience member to dance with.
"Sweet Namaste is our music, our union, our friends and fans, our desire to share and perform; to create a space to come out and have fun, to meet each other and make new friends. It's about being easy, being playful, and allowing our dominant intent to shine.....feeling good," says Robin
Fans and venue owners agree. Jean Gunta, owner of Andiamo's in Lambertville, says, "Robin and Sue each possess great personalities which equals great interactions with the audience. Shared anecdotes and experiences place the audience immediately at ease. They are witty, intelligent and are great musicians as well. I can't wait to see them again". "It was a perfect night - cozy candlelit cafe setting, an adoring crowd, a little dancing, and Sue and Robin filling the air with their superb songs of romance, heartache, humor and love," says Jim Lilly, owner of Metropolitan Bakery & Cafe in Philadelphia.
Venues where Sweet Namaste have performed include MilkBoy Acoustic Cafe in Bryn Mawr PA, Seafood Shack in Rehoboth Beach DE, Triumph Brewing Company in New Hope PA, Jersey Pride Celebration in Asbury Park NJ and Taylor's in Cherry Hill, where they drew an audience of over 150 fans at their show in March.
"We've felt so incredibly loved and supported. Friends have been there every step of the way, the women's community has spread the word, and our following is growing by leaps and bounds. We're surprised, but honored, at each gig as we see so many new faces…..people who have heard about us from friends or acquaintances, and venture out to see for themselves what Sweet Namaste is all about," says Sue.
Sue Bailey has been writing and performing music for 20 years, ten of which were spent in Nashville, TN. She played frequently at The Bluebird Cafe, Nashville's premier songwriters' club. She honed her skills penning songs with top hitmakers such as Patti Ryan (Urban Cowboy's "Lookin' For Love") and Danny Mayo ( Alabama's "If I Had You"). Her music ranges from sweet ballads, to hilarious comedic "take what life doles out, but give it back" songs, to blues and rhythmic, kickin' fun tunes.
Robin Cohen began her musical career studying classical guitar at the School of Music at Ithaca College and the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, Massachusetts. Amidst her classical training, she developed a passion for the harmonica, translating her knowledge of musical nuance to the new instrument. Robin has also added mandolin to her musical repertoire. Over the years she's performed with several bands throughout the Philadelphia/
