I’d Rather Have A Bowl Of Avant-Rock

Tucson band Gamma Like Very Ultra pulls no punches when it comes to playing the ultimate chord.

Joe De La Rosa trembles and winces cock-eyed as he places both hands in a strange knot over his fret board. Joe eats and drinks avant-garde rock and roll and from the sound of his voice, is a bit of a Savant.  He is the bassist for Gamma Like Very Ultra  http://www.gammalikeveryultra.com and says producer / manager Galen Magillicutty  wants him to learn the ultimate chord in time for a live show his band is performing at the Red Room in Tucson, Arizona on August 30th.

Galen Magillicutty flew in from Scotland about three months ago to manage and produce an album for Gamma Like Very Ultra.  Galen is part gritty and ruggedly handsome Sean Connery (in the highlander) look-a-like, part Joe Meek (paranoid eccentric recording engineer), part Phil Spector (unstable genius record producer), part Brian Epstein and a dash of drug addled abusive tyrant.

De La Rosa takes the brunt of Galen’s over the top personality.   “I came into the studio last week and Galen had me playin’ an open stringed E note about 300 times”, says De La Rosa in a stilted Gabby Hayes voice.  “I’m real nervous cause it just ain’t necessary for him to get so upset cause I’m doing the best I can.”

Galen believes in the ultimate chord, it’s been handed down in his family for hundreds of years.  Galen claims to have been present when his ancestor Anus Magillicutty strummed it on his handmade harp-like instrument.  Magillicutty says the chord will send the dark lord Satan and his minions away from earth and back to their fiery world below.

Magillicutty has a history of producing very obscure experimental rock bands and Gamma Like Very Ultra is no exception.  He once produced a group in the late 1950s whose music consisted of tying human hairs around various insects and recording the poor creatures with Galen’s famous ultrasonic magnifying microphone.  The microphone apparently recorded anguished conversations between the insects about chronic foot pain and marital unhappiness.  The world will never know what this sounded like, as the original reels were burned in Galen’s London flat fire just prior to release in the early 1960s.  Apparently Magillicutty was drinking and experimenting with a newly invented paper towel and gasoline reverb effects box that he built just for the album.

De La Rosa and Gamma Like Very Ultra will attempt Magillicutty’s ultimate chord Saturday August 30, 2008 at the Red Room in Tucson Arizona.  The show starts at 9:30pm

About Gamma Like Very Ultra:

Apart from creating incredible sound textures and reckless ditties, Gamma Like Very Ultra are interested in the ABC's of everything, not only sound. Pants. Shoelaces. Broken fingers. The incredible & the mundane. The perfect chord. The ABC's of experience, let's say. While devoted & passionate about their music, they don't take it, or themselves, all that seriously.  How can you?  After all, we're all just passing through. With influences as diverse as Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention to the Meat Puppets, with a little bit of CAN & the Minutemen thrown in for good measure, Gamma Like Very Ultra is making a name for themselves within the Tucson experimental rock scene. Fans of Captain Beefheart, Neu!, & Sonic Youth will find much of interest in these sounds.

Joe De La Rosa plays bass and assembles tape collages, while Christine Heinisch, formerly of pioneering Chicago dark cabaret / chamber punk group Apartment, is an electronic musician in her own right. The group now includes composer Ariella Lake of Apartment.  Ariella is a long time friend and collaborator of the group, who plays the guitar.
