Nearly 20 years after he first played the classic Nintendo Entertainment System, a Texas man is now recognized as the official World Record Holder on the 1985 classic Super Mario Bros.
Patrick Scott Patterson, the owner of Denton, TX based Hyperspace Arcade Entertainment, has been recognized by Twin Galaxies International Scoreboard at the new World Champion with a score of 1,077,100 points.
Patterson landed the score on videotape on Friday, July 25 and express mailed it to Twin Galaxies Nintendo referee Mr. Kelly R. Flewin of Canada, who verified and announced the record on the forums of TwinGalaxies.com on Friday, August 8.
Twin Galaxies has tracked the world records on all types of video games since 1981, and is currently the provider of video game record content with Guinness World Records, partnering with them to release the Guinness World Records Gamers Edition book. The rules are rather specific to qualify as a recognized Twin Galaxies Super Mario Bros. score, capping the number of lives to only 5 and including a ban on the famed "stair hop" trick made popular for gaining easy points and lives when Super Mario ruled store shelves in the mid-to-late 1980s.
Patterson's spends over 70 hours a week running his game-related business Hyperspace Arcade Entertainment, which repairs and refurbishes classic arcade video games such as Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. In order to practice to take the Super Mario Bros. record, Mr. Patterson had to sacrifice his days off or play late at night, taking nearly 4 months of attempts to reach his goal.
Patterson has stated he is not finished with Super Mario Bros. and has already conquered his own record score on tape. He also holds another 240 recognized world gaming records with Twin Galaxies, including the record scores on Super Mario Bros. re-issues on both the classic Super Nintendo and current hit system Nintendo Wii.
