Aug. 6, 2008 - PRLog -- Arizona is America's 48th state.  It's been governed by Mexico, was a territory of New Mexico, and a confederate state.  Arizona became important as the southern route to California during the gold rush. It is also home to several Indian tribes which pre-date the Spanish claim by hundreds of years.  Centuries of history and geology are showcased across the desert plateau that is known as Arizona.  In this series of TouringWithUs podcasts, host and travel guides, Ruth and Ed Seebeck, will explore a different location in Northern Arizona for each show. The Seebecks call their podcasts audio-postcards but listeners will recognize them as mini-vacations.  Together, they detail a week's tour through one of the most unique and historic areas in the US. These mini-vacation podcasts can be found on www.aliveauthorsnetwork.com.

The first audio-postcard is from Williams, an old-west town on historic Route 66.  Williams is situated in the largest stand of Ponderosa Pines on the planet.  Visit an 1893 saloon for queso and Corona.  Tour an historic old town.  Help the sheriff stand-off a hold-up.  Ride the rails to the Grand Canyon.  And watch out for an outlaw gang on the return trip.

The next podcast takes the listener to Flagstaff.  Nearby, tour ancient cinder cones at Sunset Crater National Park in the San Francisco Volcanic Field.  Visit ancient pueblos.  Some are brick-built on the mesa floor.  Others look like Swiss cheese, in caves scattered hundreds of feet along sheer canyon walls.  Within driving distance are the Painted Desert, the Badlands, and Petrified Forest National Park.

The third audio-postcard is from Prescott.  Abraham Lincoln named Prescott as the territorial capital in 1863.  It has a rich history, and a well-preserved historic district known as Whiskey Row. More than 500 buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.  Nearby Jerome was once a silver mining town perched precariously on the side of Cleopatra Hill.  At 5,200 feet, it's known as the mile-high city.  Explore the silver mining operation and tour the town, a mix of miner's cabins and historic buildings, many of which are now artist's galleries and shops.

The fourth show in this series comes from Sedona's famous Red Rock Country.  Sedona is an oasis on the southern edge of the dry desert country of northern Arizona. Oak Creek provides water to sustain the area. It also offers ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. The town is fun to explore, with a variety of shops, boutiques and galleries that will please any browser or shopper.  Sedona has been a resort destination since miners from Jerome began coming here to get away from the daily drudge of mining.
