Blue Moon Supporting Environment Through Local Agriculture:Ready, Willing Able for Governor Lynch

Blue Moon Market continues efforts to educate community about the benefits of supporting local agriculture and farmers

Aug. 6, 2008 - PRLog -- Exeter, NH- Blue Moon Market · Café · Yoga, 8 Clifford Street in Exeter, sees it’s mission of being ‘committed to the community and dedicated to the earth-wise education of themselves and others’ as completely in-sync with Governor Lynch’s recent proclamation of August 3-9th as New Hampshire Eat Local Week.  Blue Moon not only promotes the benefits of eating locally on a regular basis at the market and café, but will also feature a variety of special ‘local fare’ options on its menu throughout NH Eat Local Week.

“As a business that works to build our community’s consciousness of our environment and how our everyday choices affect the Earth, we are very excited that Governor Lynch sees the positive impact we can make by promoting NH’s local food choices,” says owner Kathy Gallant.  “There are so many benefits to eating local- from lowering gas consumption associated with shipping food long distances and thus reducing our carbon footprint, to supporting and strengthening the local economy. It’s hard to argue with the notion of at least trying to incorporate local goods in our diets.”

According to Michael Pollan in his book Ominvore’s Dilema ‘1/5 of America’s petroleum consumption goes to producing and transporting our food’.  A study by the New Economics Foundation in London points to the very important economic impact of ‘Eating Local’ finding that ‘every dollar spent at local shops vs. supermarkets, generates twice as much income for the local economy because it is more likely to remain in the local economy, as opposed to leaving the community at every subsequent transaction’.

Blue Moon’s Chef/Owner Gallant and the entire kitchen staff will focus on the variety of our local food options by offering A-Z local fare on its café menu from August 3rd – 9th, including soups, salads and baked goods.   The market also carries locally grown, certified organic produce by Moor Farm in North Hampton..  Blue Moon has a unique relationship with Dick Wollmar of Moor Farm, who has not only participated in, but also initiated several local Farmer’s Markets in the area.  Wollmar now delivers his certified organic produce directly to the Blue Moon in an energy conscious electric car, which Gallant emphasizes ‘gives patrons another option of employing local farm-to-table food choices in their diets’.

Gallant points out that there are plenty of other reasons to ‘Eat Local’ citing, “You will notice improved freshness and flavor when your food takes less steps to get from the farm to the table.  Food that is ‘just picked’ simply tastes better, and often requires less complicated preparation because of flavor intensity which in turn saves you time. The seasonality of local foods offers buyers the best flavors at the best times, naturally. Supporting local agriculture also promotes more selection, like tons of varieties of heirloom tomatoes you’d never see in the grocery store.  And, as an added bonus, it can reduce the likelihood of sprawl because it helps to keep family farms alive and land in a productive agricultural state.  Most importantly though, I believe it helps to create a broader sense of community when you know the people who grow and prepare your foods.”

Blue Moon Market · Café · Yoga invites the community to enjoy local food options during NH Eat Local Week and explore the ‘greater ripple effect’ that takes place when each of us makes positive changes for the Earth, no matter how small.  For more information visit www.bluemoonmarket.net contact the Blue Moon at 778-6850.
