The researchers from the University of California analysed nearly 160 different studies from England, Australia and Indonesia about the effects of food on the brain. The researchers found that omega-3 fatty acids many improve children’s school performance in spelling, reading, and with less behavioural problems.
Professor of Neurourgery and Physiology at University of California, Fernando Gómez-Pinilla said “Dietary deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids in humans is associated with an increased risk of attention deficit, dyslexia, dementia, depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.”
Sales of capsules omega-3 fatty acids have been increasing in the like of the UK as parents hear of the suggested benefits on school children’s performance, however, Professor Gómez-Pinilla commented that it would be of greater benefit to get the omega-3 fatty acids through natural food sources, as these will also provide additional nutrients.
Professor Gómez-Pinilla suggested that eating too much junk food rich in saturated fat can have a negative effect on the brain. He suggested that a healthy diet, exercise and a good night sleep can provide good cognitive benefits.
Professor Gómez-Pinilla also commented that a deficiency in Folic acid, as can be found in spinach, yeast, and orange juice can lead to depression.
Laura J. Stevens a researcher with the Department of Foods and Nutrition at Purdue University found that young children who had lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids showed more behavioural problems, and difficulties with learning and health than those children that higher amounts of the omega-3 fatty acid in their blood stream.
