Qsan has positioned itself as iSCSI / IP SAN and SAS expert ever since established in year 2004. Qsan now enhances all of its RAID controllers with new Green feature: Automatic Disk Spin Down. With Automatic Disk Spin Down availability, Qsan makes RAID controllers Green and helps customers to reduce the overall disk power consumption.
Energy Saving has been an important issue for both environment protection and power cost. The hard drives consume most power in the subsystems. But in many applications, such as email backup storage, data pool, and etc, there is no or few I/O access after office hour or the systems have regular access time. If those less-accessed hard drives can be spinning down when I/O access opportunity is low, the overall power cost can be reduced. Take a data pool equipped with 16 1TB SATA II drives for example, and usually there is no access from 7:00PM to 9:00AM, Qsan controller can trigger hard drives to spin down. By comparing the hard drives’ power consumption, customers can save at least 50% of disk power cost. If a subsystem is used for backup and rarely accessed, with proper configuration, customers can save up to 70% of disk power cost.
Qsan’s Automatic Disk Spin Down feature is different from MAID technology. Qsan spin down feature is to keep disks spinning until they are not needed which is opposite to MAID technology.
