STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Congratulations to Dr. Joanna C. Pessolano, who was selected by the student body of New York Medical College to receive the NYMC Teaching Award. Dr. Pessolano was recognized by the Class of 2008 for her dedication as an educator, as well as for her sage advice and enthusiastic support of students' academic endeavors.
After the "Anointing of the Hands" ceremony in which Dr. Pessolano and Dr. Jane Ponterio, her associate, participated, Dr. Pessolano received the award at the Seniors Honors Ceremony at the campus in Valhalla, Westchester County. A reception followed the commencement exercises at Carnegie Hall.
Dr. Pessolano graduated from the six-year Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at the City College of New York. She received her medical degree from New York Medical College, where she is an assistant professor in obstetrics and gynecology.
The doctor currently serves as clerkship director for OB/GYN medical students at Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton, and also is director of primary-care gynecology.
Dr. Pessolano is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American College of Physicians, a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Board of Internal Medicine. She is certified as a menopause practitioner by the North American Menopause Society.
She has shared a private practice in gynecology, menopausal medicine and gynecologic surgery in New Springville with Dr. Ponterio for more than 22 years. The two are alumnae of Notre Dame Academy High School, Grymes Hill.
