Although Palm trees were once thought to be suitable for planting only in tropical landscapes, several cold hardy palm trees occur naturally, growing in America, where snows fall during winter. The Windmill Palm is known to be cold hardy to 0° F or below and is suitable for planting in Zones 3-11.

Cold Hardy Windmill Palm Trees for Northern Garden Planting
* The Windmill Palm tree is the most cold-hardy of the palms – large trees having survived sub-zero temperatures and snow and ice storms.
* Leaves are a waxy bright green above and silver-green below; growing 2 feet long and 2 feet wide, smaller than most other palm trees.
* Trunk is slender, graceful are covered with brown-black fibers that appear as hair from a distance, and with aging, the fibers turn gray, and on large old trees the fibers fall off to reveal a slick beautiful trunk.
* Windmill palm trees grow a flower stalk 2 feet long, with yellow, pleasantly aromatic flowers developing into ½” long blue fruits.

Growing Tips:
When planting the palm trees, make sure you dig holes big enough to accommodate the roots of the tree. A good rule of thumb is to dig a hole 3 times the diameter of the root ball. For backfill, use existing soil and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets. Do not tamp the backfill Soil under the ball should be undisturbed to prevent settling.
