“It is not the expert care we provide for the sick and elderly,” states the website of a group of Franciscan Sisters in Illinois. “Unless we strive to offer and impart to them the basic and fundamental need to draw closer to God, we have given them very little.”
This sums up the spirituality of the Daughters of St. Francis of Assisi, in Lacon, IL, a group of sisters who live out their consecration joyfully and witness and evangelize by their example. They are committed to the sick and elderly, in their time directly before eternity. The Sisters try to find what their patients need in their shortening days of life, and what is most important to them.
“Our sick and elderly is our mission as Daughters of St. Francis,” says Sr. Adriana, superior of the community. “We carry out corporal and spiritual works of mercy. How will this or that work lead this person toward their highest goals? Any work done for God is important.”
Their website states, “We follow Christ after the example of St. Francis; we are called to grow in our commitment to prayer.”
The sisters were founded in 1894 in Budapest, Hungary, and moved to Lacon in 1948. Their website is www.laconfranciscans.org. They can be contacted at simplicity@mtco.com or (309) 246-2175.
