See that car in your rear-view mirror?
The driver wants to kill you.
Don’t take it personally.
You just happen to be in the way.
In Scott Cherney’s new novel, Red Asphalt (Lulu, ISBN #976-1-4357-
1186-0), the operator of the vehicle in question is a troubled medical courier in a triple threat cage match with his two biggest adversaries-
everyday life and himself. His marriage to the woman he believed to be his soul mate is rapidly evaporating before his eyes. The book he’s been working on for over a decade is slipping through his fingers as he struggles to complete it. As these pressures grow, he compensates by conjuring up outrageous road rage scenarios in the multiplex of his mind. To make matters even worse, he drives for a living. As his life, job and dreams simultaneously implode, his wild fantasies begin to literally bleed over into reality. Now with a gun in one hand and a steering wheel in the other, this distant runner-up in the human race feels empowered for the very first time. At least our boy’s finally found a purpose in life.
Set in Northern California locations such as Stockton, Lodi and the fabled Gold Country, Red Asphalt tells a violent, tragic tale with darkly humorous touches and pointed social commentary with topics that include the aforementioned road rage, creativity, unrequited love and even mortality itself.
Author Scott Cherney has also written the movie memoir In the Dark: A Life and Times in a Movie Theater (PublishAmerica ISBN# 1-59286-464-
3) and a collection of comedy sketches called Now THAT’S Funny! (Lulu ISBN #1-4116-4696-
7) As a playwright, his works include Song of the Lone Prairie, The Legend of the Rogue and LaRue’s Return (with Edward Thorpe). In his lifetime, Scott has also been an award-winning actor, a stand-up comic, a film critic and a cowboy stunt performer in a western ghost town. Just like his main character in Red Asphalt, Cherney taught traffic school and has been employed as a medical courier, picking up and delivering bodily fluids and parts to and from medical facilities. He currently lives near Portland, Oregon with his wife, Laurie.
