The coasters were designed using a variety of slates, which have been imported to the United States from exotic locations such as India, South America, and China. Once it has arrived in their warehouse the stone is sorted by Stone Artists, who select only the most colorful and beautiful pieces for distribution. The slate is then cut down, sanded, and shaped, into attractive 4 inch pieces which are ready for shipment to customers around the world.

Slate is used for the coasters because it is particularly resistant to damage from acid rain, freezing, and sun fading. It also has a unique property which makes the surface of the stone porous. This means that when a wet glass is placed on the coaster, the moisture will absorb into the stone, leaving the furniture beneath completely dry.
