Jul 24, 2008 – The Capital Hip Hop Soul Fest debuts in the nation's capital this Saturday, July 26th from 11am-8pm in Marvin Gaye Park. The all-day outdoors music festival will have two music stages and a demonstration stage featuring a freestyle battle-zone, a poetry slam, dancing and an excerpt of the play "The 70% Club". Writer Felicia Pride, author of THE MESSAGE: 100 LIFE LESSONS FROM HIP-HOP'S GREATEST SONGS, will be in the Writer's Row area of the festival, promoting signing autographed copies of her book. Miss DC Teen and DC council members Yvette Alexander and Kwame Brown will have booths at the event as well.
Liberated Muse Productions, a Washington DC community-based arts event-planning group is the organization behind the event that has already generated enormous buzz. "We have gotten a fantastic response," says Liberated Muse co-founder, Khadijah Ali-Coleman. "We've had to extend the festival by two hours because it will be jam-packed with activities and performances. People are looking forward to this event because of the music and the opportunity to be part of a feel-good event." The festival will take place in Marvin Gaye Park which is named after hometown legend Marvin Gaye who grew up in the park's surrounding community, Deanwood. The park is located in the northeast part of Washington DC and will allow local metropolitan artists to connect with their audiences while promoting enjoyable events targeting those in a 25-40 year-old age group who may be young professionals who are single or married with families. "This festival is for everyone who wants to have a good time, remembers hip-hop from back in the day and appreciates hip-hop that has respect to its roots and to the genre as a whole," says Festival Director, Maceo Thomas. Some of the music performers scheduled to appear include hip-hop artists Substantial, Cool Cee Brown, Mello-D & the Rados and Christylez while vocalists Rogiers, Robyn Janelle, Afi Soul, and Dee Stone perform as well. For the full program listing, visit www.capitalhiphopsoulfest.com and download the festival program. In an effort to promote green living and waste conservation, limited programs will be available at the festival to encourage visitors to print programs they will use. Festival-goers are also encouraged to use Metro. To learn more about opportunities to vend at this event or co-sponsor this event, contact Maceo Thomas at 202.285.4529 for information on vending and sponsorship packages. # # # Community-based organization geared toward promoting and implementing positive community programming
