Outer Banks’ First New Oceanfront Condominium Complex in Nearly 20 Years Opens

Kill Devil Hills, NC – July 22th 2008/First Flight Rentals/Press Release – First Flight Retreat Condominiums, the first ocean front condominium complex built in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in close to twenty years welcomed its first vacationers on July 12th. First Flight Retreat is located at Milepost 8.5 in Kill Devil Hills and offers travelers high-end accommodations and spectacular ocean views while being situated on a wide part of the beautiful Outer Banks beaches.

The Outer Banks of North Carolina has witnessed a boom in new rental homes in the last ten years, with approximately 8,000 homes built in Dare County from 1996-2005.  Yet due to strict zoning ordinances, few condos were built on the oceanfront in any of the beach communities from Nags Head to Corolla.  In 2006, a zoning ordinance was approved by the Town of Kill Devil Hills that changed the oceanfront zone to a floor-area ratio constraint, rather than a per acreage limit.

Given that the price of an oceanfront lot is in the range of $1 - 1.5 million, most oceanfront homes built now have to be at least 6 bedrooms to justify the land cost.  First Flight Rentals believes it is filling a void in the vacation rental supply for new, smaller oceanfront accommodations, which is confirmed by the strong advance bookings this season.
