The nature retreat centre is located on the edge Algonquin Provincial Park on Kawawaymog Lake, where Thomson spent much of his time painting. Todd Lucier, co-founder of Northern Edge Algonquin says "It's an inspiring nature getway for the artist and non-artist alike. Canoeing, campfires, storytelling and art. And how could any Thomson admirer, not wade into discussion of the mysterious circumstances surrounding Thomson’s death in 1917?”
Artists and artists to be come to this art retreat from all over Ontario to explore their own talents and soak in all nature has to offer. For the same reasons that Tom Thomson so enjoyed capturing Algonquin Park's landscape, participants who visit Northern Edge Algonquin will sit where Thomson sat and record their own impressions.
During the art retreat participants paddle canoes to islands that inspired Thomson, carry with them fresh art supplies, and paint or sketch with artist and teacher Jen Daniels. As Jen Daniels, said "Sitting where Tom Thomson sat, it's like being in a Group of Seven Painting, You don't need much more than that" . Daniels, an established artist, now living around Algonquin Park is a perfect fit for the "Tom Thomson Experience. Not only has she been deeply inspired by the works of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, but as a child she studied under another Group of Seven artist, Aurthur Lismer.
