If you are thinking about moving abroad and starting a new life, you are now being advised to learn the language.
As Brits we tend to think that if you are not being understood talking slower and louder will do the trick, but the days of Brits getting by on English charm alone are coming to an end and we are being advised to learn the language of the destination where we plan to move too.
In a recent study families returning to the UK from what should have been them starting their new lives were interviewed and sighted the language barrier as the main reason for their return.
“I couldn’t even pick up the phone, because I didn’t speak a word of French”, explained Tony Randall, who recently packed his bags again to come back to Blighty. “Next time I will make the effort to learn the language and make sure that my income is sorted”.
Although moving away has many benefits – the lifestyle, climate and relaxed way of life – if you can’t grasp the basics of communication then going about your day to day life is virtually impossible.
With France boasting more than 500 more hours of sunshine a year than then UK, it is not surprising that it is still a top destination for expats.
