First ever umbrella organization of Memon community in U.S. A was launch on July 19th 2008. This event was attended by more than 300 community members from all over USA. This was first of its kind meeting where about Memons from more than dozens states were present.
Social Hour started about 7 pm sharp and the program started at 8:30 pm. Meeting was started with recitation of Quran and Master of ceremony was Mr. Arif Merchant. First speaker was the Mr. Yousuf Tar who was elected as President of Memon Organization of North America. Mr. Tar spoke to the crowd about the idea of having umbrella organization and having a positive impact in US community services. Mr. Tar also talked about that this organization will be non-for profit 501-3-c organization and will follow all the rules, regulations and codes of Internal Revenue Services. Mr. Tar also called in for the unity of Memon and serves the community at large in a united fashion. Mr. Farooq Vakil presented the vision. Speakers were lined in and first speaker was Mr. Yasser Aman who is Executive Director of Ummah Clinic in Los Angeles. Speaker lined from out of state were Dr. Naseem Shekhani from National Health Forum and also representing Memon Medical Institute; Karachi. Dr. Shekhani is from St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. Daniel Noorani from Chicago of Citizen’s Foundation and Mr. Tariq Yoonus of AX publishing from Richland Texas. Representation from Pakistan, India and Dubai based was also present.
Mr. Abdool Carrim Moosa presented a check for donation to Ummah clinic and a check for the burial arrangement for the indigent Muslims. Mrs Nigar Rangoonwala and Mrs. Nasim Bangloria also spoke on the occasion. Excellent dinner was served and folks enjoyed the meeting well. “Meeting was well worth it.” Stated Mr. Hussain Rokerya who has been a great supporter of Memon unity.
Finally Board of Trustees of Memon Organization of North America had a Q&A. The initial Board of Trustees are as follows, Mr. Yousuf Tar, Farooq Vakil, Salim Adaya, Abdool C. Moosa, Abdul Wahab, Zakaria Sattar and Arif Merchant. Interesting questions were asked and finally Mr. Yousuf Tar announced that about 150 members were singed in; agreed that they will work along with all international organization including World Memon Organization as far as they stay in frame work of Internal revenue Service’s Code of conduct for non-profits organizations.
