July 21, 2008 - PRLog -- Who is Sense International?

Sense International is a global leader in the provision of services for people who are both deaf and blind in the developing world.

The combination of vision and hearing loss makes it difficult for deafblind people to access sufficient information from the environment in order to make informed decisions and choices about their lives. The simplest things a sighted and hearing person takes for granted can become a significant challenge or barrier for someone with deafblindness.

In developing countries, this is amplified as deafblind people and their families have little access to specialised healthcare and no social welfare. These challenges are often too much to bear for a family already living in poverty and as such children get neglected, institutionalised and abandoned; without support four out of five die before their fifth birthday.

With access to expert support and education however, deafblind people are able to understand their environment, learn to communicate, work to support themselves and live active lives.

Sense International works in ten developing countries worldwide to ensure that deafblind people receive the crucial support they need. We assess new born babies for deafblindness, educate deafblind children, provide vocational training to adults, train teachers, form networks of deafblind people and their parents and lobby for additional recognition and services on behalf of deafblind people.
Sense International and Rotary

Rotary and Sense International share a commitment to “doing good in the world” and expanding our humanitarian reach. Sense International has had the opportunity to present its work to many Rotary clubs over the years and at the annual Rotary conference. We have benefited from Rotary’s support through donations, through the inclusion of our work in the RIBI project library and by having Rotarians take part in our fundraising events.
Get involved – help us to double our reach in the next three years!

Sense International currently provides crucial services to 13,000 deafblind people each year but we have set ourselves the ambitious yet achievable target of doubling our reach in the next three years. You can help us to reach this goal and transform the lives of thousands of deafblind babies, children and adults by supporting our work.

   * Support a specific project: Does your club have a particular interest in Bangladesh, India, East Africa, Latina America or Romania? Or is your club looking for an education project to support, or a project involving young adults or babies for example? By making a donation to our work, your club could support a specific project and make a significant difference that will be visible to you. Sense International would be committed to reporting back to your club about the progress of the project and how your funds are being used.
   * Take part in a fundraising event: Every year we organise a range of events designed to raise funds for our work. These range from challenge events (trekking, horse riding, cycling, dog sledging) to running events (marathons, 10K or 5K runs), extreme events (bungee jumps, skydives, white water rafting) and special events (balls, film nights, receptions).
   * Have a collection day: Sense International can provide you with collection tins to raise funds for us from the public.
   * Raise awareness of our work amongst other clubs: Raise awareness of the issues around deafblindness and talk to other Rotarians about what we do.
