Jul 20, 2008 – A panel of speakers will address the changing dynamics of the Catholic faith in the Latino community. Veronica Mendez, a Sister of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine, has been asked to be among a select panel of speakers speaking on the subject Latinos and the Future of Catholicism. Sister Mendez was chosen because of her work ministering with Hispanics for over forty years.
Sister Mendez works as a Pastoral Service team member for RENEW International, presenting on topics of adult faith formation and outreach to Spanish and English-speaking groups in parishes around the United States
Rafael Pi Roman, the host and senior editor of WNET/Thirteen’ s Emmy award-winning program “New York Voices,” will lead the panel in a discussion of the history and future of Latinos in Catholic New York. In addition to Sister Mendez, Mr. Pi Roman will be joined by Reverend Monsignor Lorenzo Albacete, former President of the Pontifical University of Puerto Rico; Anthony M. Stevens-Arroyo, Professor Emeritus, Brooklyn College; Barbara Gonzalez, Chair, Centro Altagracia de Fe y Justicia; and David Gonzalez, columnist, The New York Times.
Catholics in New York, 1808-1946, is presented on the occasion of the bicentennial of the formation of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, which features photographs, paintings, schoolbooks, family heirlooms, political memorabilia, and oral histories.
