Winning Fiberglass Pool
A local South Shore company has won the 2008 Masters of Design Award, a prestigious annual prize given by Pool Spa News, a national trade magazine for pool industry professionals. Cherry Hill Pools of Pembroke, Massachusetts, won the award for a design in which a barren backyard in Shrewsbury was turned into a family-friendly garden that includes a maintenance-

This is the first time a South Shore company has won the award, according to the magazine.
The prize-winning installation includes a 15’ by 34’ class, kidney-shaped swimming pool surrounded by a wide deck composed of 12X12 squares of Brazilian quartzite. Minimal landscaping utilizing natural and cultured stone accentuates the deck’s design. Above the main pool, a round, shallow (only 16 inches deep) wading pool connects via a waterfall
spillway, doing double duty as landscape feature and children’s play area.
A series of stone pillars crowned with carriage lamps supports the pool area’s fencing; it lends architectural interest while dividing the large backyard into separate play areas.
“We install over 100 pools a year, but each one is different,” says McGill. “This whole backyard was ledge. We had to drill and jackhammer to prepare the site, but now you’d never know,” he added.
Conifers, perennials, and colorful annuals will add to the lush elements of the composition as they mature and fill in areas near the fence and the wading pool end of the pool area.
“If there had been a Best in Show, this project would have received it,” said Jim Lakey, editor of Pool Spa News, published by Hanley-Wood. The magazine will announce the winners of its six annual awards in its August 2008 issue on newsstands July 11th. Cherry Hill Pools and Spas won its Masters of Design Award in the ‘fiberglass pool’ category. Other categories include ‘Gunite (shotcrete) pools,’ ‘water features,’ ‘liner pools,’ and ‘spas.’
Cherry Hill Pool & Spa is located on Washington Street in Pembroke. Earlier this year, the company was also awarded first and second place in the residential fiberglass pool category by the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, Region 9.
