In an annual survey conducted by consulting firm Mercer, Singapore has come out tops in Asia for having the highest quality of living. Globally, Singapore is ranked 32nd, after climbing two spots from last year. Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe and Osaka trail just behind Singapore. Overall, European cities dominate the top global rankings.
In the MasterCard Worldwide Centers of Commerce Index, an international survey which is said to be used by multinationals to help guide investment decisions, Singapore ranks fourth globally just behind London, New York and Tokyo (in that order), but in terms of ease of doing business, a key criterion evaluated in the survey the Republic ranks first globally. Singapore was also top in the Asia-Pacific for two of the other six criteria used in the ranking namely economic stability and the legal/political framework. The survey evaluates a range of factors, including quality of life, investor protection, health and safety, corporate tax levels, volume and connectivity of financial flow, reputation as a business centre, knowledge creation and information flow, and liveability.
In the French credit insurance firm Coface's Business Climate@ratings, which was released in June this year, Singapore is rated as a very safe place to do business. The study provides two ratings for 150 countries - a rating on risks inherent in the business climate, and a more holistic rating that takes into account the business climate, economic and financial prospects and company payment behavior. Singapore's ratings of A1 in both areas, reflects a lowest category of risk and places the city state in the top band, which includes Germany, Australia and Japan.
