The Service Learning and Community Development program provides a hands-on approach to students who have a strong interest in theoretical elements and currents issues impacting community life in South Africa. The service learning component of the program places students at a variety of community sites according to the student’s qualifications, academic background and interests. The placement sites cover a variety of social issues including, but not limited to, Education, Art and Music Programs, HIV/AIDS Prevention, Youth Development Programs, Nursing, and Entrepreneurship development. Regardless of the placement site’s mission, students participating in the program will be actively involved in community development.
In addition, CEA in Stellenbosch also offers South African Studies. This program is a more traditional approach to study abroad, offering a variety of historically rich and relevant current issues courses. With this program students can study Afrikaans Language and Literature; Economic and Developmental Problems in Africa; Politics and Cultural Change in South Africa; South African Photography and much more!
Students will study at Stellenbosch University, one of South Africa’s leading universities for which the town is known. With just under 100,000 locals in this college town, students will be able to fully immerse themselves in the culture of Stellenbosch. Martina Barth, Development Manager at CEA believes that, “this experience will undoubtedly leave students with a deeper understanding of the history, cultural, social problems and resolutions facing South Africa and Africa today”.
