Delaware-born author and musician K.A. Liedel publishes his debut novel, “Calbraith”
(978-1438245737, US Trade paperback, 452 pp, 6x9, $14.95.)
“Calbraith”
is a dramatic and controversial retelling of the life of Caratacus, a 1st-Century A.D. Celtic king who was brought to Rome as a slave, only to eventually be granted his freedom. Sired in secrecy and raised a commoner, Caratacus endures rape, abandonment, and insanity en route to a bloody conquest and his eventual serfdom. When finally freed, the the warrior-king finds himself at the mercy of imperial politics, forbidden love, and Caesar’s own secret agenda.
With his debut novel “Calbraith,”
Liedel deftly portrays a world of cultural and political strife similar to our own. “There are allegorical qualities, to be sure,” he says. “You have two vastly different societies, the Celts and the Romans, clashing in ways not unlike what we’re seeing today. There’s no doubt that Caratacus was considered a terrorist by the Roman Empire. His journey is equivalent to Osama bin Laden arriving in the United States and then being granted citizenship.”
Still, despite the political underpinnings, the book remains true to the era which it depicts. “The novel is foremost a labor of love, serving as a dedication to the mysticism of the Celts,” he continues. “It’s broadly accessible in portraying a group of people we don’t hear an awful lot about in today’s world.”
