The Next Level - How Does an Independent Video Game Site Succeed for Ten Years?

When Chris Scantleberry started publishing video game reviews at http://www.the-nextlevel.com in mid-1998, he could scarcely dream that the small, independent site would outlast media giants like Daily Radar and Gamefan Online, not to mention innumerable smaller sites. This month, to mark the site’s tenth anniversary, The Next Level is debuting a new look and a renewed commitment to matching up eager gamers with the experiences they crave.

The site serves up not only video game reviews, but also diverse features targeted at the gaming lifestyle and interviews with industry legends like Shigeru Miyamoto (http://www.the-nextlevel.com/features/interviews/shigeru-...) and Yuji Naka (http://www.the-nextlevel.com/features/interviews/yuji-naka/). For the past four years, The Next Level’s editorial and community areas were run separately, but the new design also marks a reunion between staff members that had been working apart.

Over the next few months, The Next Level will work more closely than ever before with video game publishers and public relations groups to heighten its effectiveness as a gaming destination for millions of readers. Current owner Nick Vlamakis thinks passion and community are the keys to success: “We have something that even many of the largest video game sites do not, and that is a strong, dedicated, and loyal fan base that functions almost as a family. We reward the passion and skill of game makers with the enthusiasm, appreciation, and support of discerning fans.”
