MARCHEN DREAMFAKTORY Marches to Their Own Drum
Start-up Company Offers a New Generation of Graphic Novel
By Celeste Green, MDF Press
Los Angeles, CA – Comic books, graphic novels, whatever you want to call them; Märchen Dreamfaktory breathes new life into an old concept.
This little company that could is a self-started enterprise by Creative Director Tony Mark and Artistic Director Gary Laib (respective author and artist of Platinum Studios’ “Comic Book Challenge” Finalist, Darkside). They choose to embrace and utilize the variation in artwork and writing-style among their company members, unlike most mainstream graphic novel industries.
The Märchen (German for a folktale or fairy story) mission statement tells it best: “Märchen Dreamfaktory is comprised of an eclectic group of artists and writers, using their wide range of knowledge and experience to produce genre-spanning graphic novels. While focused primarily on comic books, this inspired collective aspires to branch out into video games, animated series, and even feature films.”
With authors and artists coming from film, computer, theater, and graphic design backgrounds, the themes and techniques reflect each individual’s personality and interests, rather than an over-played company mantra. This had led to individual success for some titles, having been in talks for movie and mini-series deals, video games, and action figures, which is being expertly parlayed into company success by Tony Mark.
