Winston-Salem, NC - Nicole Russo, an English major at the Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, spent four weeks this summer volunteering in a local primary school in the Mutundwe neighborhood of Kampala, Uganda as part of the Volunteer Abroad program operated by A Broader View Volunteers.  Ms. Russo worked alongside local Ugandan teachers teaching conversation English to youth ages 5-12 through the use of games, songs and other teaching materials. Her volunteer work was part of an on-going initiative at the school to increase English language learning.  In addition to approximately 40 hours of volunteering each week, Ms. Russo received cultural immersion and education about Uganda customs while living with a local host family. Ms. Russo used her free time to explore local sites, including Bujjagali Falls the source of the Nile and Murchinson Falls in northern Uganda.

“The school I taught at was truly wonderful. It was most certainly a challenge because of the different pace of working and manner of disciplining the children, but the kids could not have been any more polite, eager to learn and willing to share with me. Furthermore the teaching staff was not only helpful at all times, but by the end I was able to consider most of them good friends and have remained in touch with them since arriving home. I strongly recommend the school and the host family to any future volunteer interested in a similar experience. Thank you so much, the experience was everything and more, I wish I could have stayed longer” - Nicole Russo.

Nicole Russo volunteered through A Broader View Volunteers, a leader in operating international volunteer programs. A Broader View Volunteer Corp makes volunteering abroad possible for people with limited time by providing the opportunity to experience another culture while making a real difference in people’s lives. Programs range from 1 to 24 weeks. A Broader View Volunteer programs are open to people of all ages and backgrounds. Volunteers are given customized placements based on their skills and interests, and work side-by-side with local people on community-led initiatives. Volunteers work with infants and children, teenagers, adults, the elderly, and people with special needs like HIV/AIDS or mental or physical disabilities.

“Many people are searching for a way to really make a difference,” says Sarah Comitale, Executive Director of ABV.  “We give people the change to discover that volunteering overseas is no longer just a dream, but something they can actually do.”

An A Broader View program includes orientation with in-country expert staff.  Participants are provided room and board with a local host family and given project support and briefing which provides insight into the culture and community where they volunteer. Volunteers pay their own airfare and a U.S. tax-deductible program fee to A Broader View Volunteers to cover all in-country expenses.
