Sea Islands YouthBuild Students form O Ambassadors Club

Students from the Sea Islands YouthBuild Charter High School will join in the battle against hunger, poverty, and limited access to education by forming an O Ambassador Club.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)Jul 08, 2008 – Students from the Sea Islands YouthBuild Charter High School will join in the battle against hunger, poverty, and limited access to education by forming an O Ambassador Club.

Oprah’s Angel Network teamed up with Free The Children creating the O Ambassadors program to motivate and educate youth to become active global citizens who will create real change in their communities and the world.

“The O Ambassadors Club is an example of our performance-based learning environment, where students participate in real-world projects and are expected to use a combination of technical skills, workplace skills, related academic skills, creativity, other higher-order thinking skills and available resources to solve life situations,” said Larry Blasch  Sea Islands YouthBuild Board of Directors Chairman.   “Participating in programs that use global issues as learning outcomes is an integral part of our school curriculum.”

Through the program, students will learn about poverty, education, health, and sustainable development — the core themes of the Millennium Development Goals. World leaders have promised to meet these goals by 2015, with the help of students, educators, business leaders, and the general public, including the students and staff at Sea Islands YouthBuild, to make sure these goals are met.

The Sea Islands YouthBuild O Ambassadors Club will support development initiatives in West Africa.

This school-based program is an exploration of idea-sharing, active learning and taking action.  YouthBuild students will participate in specific fundraising and awareness activities to educate other students and community members. They will also learn about the leadership role they can take to be the change-makers who will make a tangible difference for their peers in their communities and in the developing world.

“Our students are extremely excited to have been selected to work on a global project. This unique experience in character education will expose students to new cultures and current issues affecting their world,” said Renee Chewning, Sea Islands YouthBuild Director.  “As part of the O Ambassadors Club, students will have exclusive access to online resources and share networking opportunities with other clubs around the world.”

“This project is so cool because it helps us learn more about our culture and its roots in West Africa; and gives us a chance to help other people who don’t have the things we have,” said LaMont’e Dickinson, student at Sea Islands YouthBuild.  “Who knows, maybe one of the people we help is a relative.”

Sea Islands YouthBuild offers integrated, academic and technical education, linking learning to real life. In our supportive environment students experience individual growth in self-confidence, leadership skills, and establish a foundation and vision for their future with the desire and ability to pursue advanced training and education.
