The recent acquisition of Plazes social networking platform has shed light on the growing segment of "geotagging"
OurGlobes, formed in early 2007, has attracted a member base which propelled its unique visits up 650% in the last three months, according to Alexa.com. The site is a more traditional social network, allowing users to post or embed YouTube, Flickr, or other media onto a Google Maps platform within their personal profile. Leveraging the basic utilities found on sites such as Facebook and MySpace, Ourglobes takes social netowkring a step further, allowing members to create personal journals with their media and maps. The drag and drop forms make adding photos and movies simple, so members can tag location-based media easily.
Clearly, the geotagging sector is still quite small and has room for improvement. But with a growing membership coupled with a growing interest from corporate entities, OurGlobes and the entire segment of location-based social networking seems to have a bright future ahead.
