In keeping with their philosophy to train their DO-178B software engineers in all aspects of software engineering and aviation in general, Avionyx recently added a 28-week Private Pilot Ground School as an elective course in its internal engineering training curriculum. The response from its employees was so positive that the first 20-student class was filled in less than a day. And after only a few classes, the excitement level continued to increase as a number of engineers were already asking about flying lessons.
When asked if the company would be willing to spring for the additional cost of flying lessons, president and instrument-rated pilot, Larry Allgood responded by saying, "Well, that's considerably more expensive than ground school, but if the interest level is high enough, we should be able to at least offset some of the cost of flying lessons. And who knows, if our company continues to grow at our current rate, helping sponsor a flying club and a plane could be an option. Our employees are very goal-oriented and I imagine if that's what they want, that's what will eventually happen. And to be honest, nothing would make me happier than to be able to help them experience the joy of flying. It certainly has been one of the most personally rewarding and enjoyable things I have done".
