New Books Provide Children a Gateway to Express Pain to Caregivers During Times of Illness

Journals provide encouragement during surgical procedures and hospital stays.

July 1, 2008 - PRLog -- Delaware, OH  – Having a major illness can be an emotional roller coaster for anyone, but it can be especially scary to children. With the help of two new books, My Surgery Journal and My Hospital Journal, kids will be able to express fear, emotional distress, and pain to their caregivers in a creative and healing manner. In this series of books, authors Erin Coss and Katie Kinsella provide journals that allow children several ways to effectively communicate their emotions and pain during a period of infirmity.

When Katie learned that young Nathan would need a tonsillectomy, she created a journal for him to express his feelings around the surgery and through the healing process. Katie’s sister Erin loved the idea, and the two set out to give children more options for coping during times of illness.

Starting the night before their surgery or hospital stay, the child will work through the healing process with a five-day journal. Each day the child addresses their emotions by:

● Answering questions focused on healing
● Relating their pain through a colorful group of caricatures
● Being free to dream through imagination sequences
● Expressing their feelings through art
● Gaining renewed confidence with words of encouragement
