Our Neighborhood Homework House names new Executive Director

PRLog (Press Release) – Jun 27, 2008 – Nutt brings a wealth of experience with nonprofit organizations as well as with broader educational groups. Previously, Nutt was director of Wraparound Services at San Gabriel Children’s Center, which provides strength-based, family-centered care to children with multiple, complex, and enduring mental health and behavioral needs in family settings. In addition, Nutt spent more than a decade as the program director of Foster/Kinship Care Education- Independent Living Programs at Citrus, Mt. San Antonio, and Chaffey Colleges. There, she developed comprehensive, innovative training and support services for foster parents, relative care providers, foster/probation youth, and others working with children. Nutt’s additional experience includes: Service coordinator at San Gabriel/Pomona Regional Center; director/teacher with Covina Development Center; founder of San Gabriel/Pomona Parents’ Place, Family Resource Center; district advisory board member for Quality Education, Claremont Unified School District. “The board looks forward to welcoming Karen Nutt, who has spent more than two decades serving children and families in southern California,” says Barbara Dickerson, president of the Board of Homework House. Nutt is replacing Abigail Gaines, who has been with Homework House for nearly a decade. “Abigail brought to the role her passion for the children and their families of Azusa,” says Dickerson, “and she has been instrumental in expanding programs for teens and the parents of all the students served by Homework House. Under Gaines’s leadership, Homework House has opened a Parent Center and has equipped the space so that parents can hold seminars, acquire new skills such as computer applications, and explore employment opportunities. Founded in 1997 by two teachers, Our Neighborhood Homework House provides free tutoring and mentoring to at- risk students in Azusa. Homework House operates two tutoring centers and has grown to serve 140 students in grades kindergarten through high school.
