The gentleman’s 18 carat gold Breitling Emergency SuperQuartz wrist watch has been valued at £4,000 to £6,000 for the auction on Monday 7 July, but retails for new at £24,410.
The Breitling Emergency watch was originally designed for pilots and aircrews but has also become a cult fashion piece. It is an instrument watch with a built-in microtransmitter broadcasting on the 121.5mHz aircraft emergency frequency.
Following a crash or forced landing, the watch can broadcast a signal for rescuers to home in on. The emergency transmitter is activated by unscrewing a protective cap and by pulling the antenna out fully. It will then broadcast for 48 hours with a range of 90 nautical miles.
Owners face a severe cash penalty for inappropriate use of the emergency signal.
