Jun 26, 2008 – “As long as a system admits it's imperfect, and is searching for a way to do better, then that's what's important" said Edward Shaughnessy while comparing different K-12 educational systems.
Edward is a science teacher at Lake Forest Academy, a residential school in Illinois, USA and previously served as department chairperson. In a week-long international faculty workshop held at Treamis World School in Electronics City, Bangalore, he expressed his enthusiasm for improvement in global education. Sponsored by both Treamis and Lake Forest Academy, the workshop was attended by teachers, parents and people interested in early and secondary education. Topics such as curriculum, classroom dynamics, instructional materials, homework, teacher communication, and parental involvement were discussed. This workshop marks the beginning of the historic imitative taken by Treamis World School, in association with Lake Forest Academy, to develop a common learning platform for Kindergarten -12th grade education in the two countries. Ardlle Hagar, chairperson of Lake Forest’s mathematics department, explained, “I had a great session with the teachers. While sharing a lot of different ideas in teaching, we have gained a lot of ideas. In spite of cultural differences, there is a passion which is common to the teaching community.” A segment of the workshop included case studies on typical and atypical problems in the classroom that teachers have faced. Teachers from the US and India proposed solutions to the situations described based on their respective educational cultures and backgrounds. The differences and similarities in their analysis and approach were noted. Treamis World School and Lake Forest Academy share the vision of strong inter-school partnerships in order to achieve curriculum goals. Both the schools are aligned in their mission and philosophy and offer integrated curriculum of academics, arts and sports. The schools share best practices and information technology. They also have both teacher and student exchange programs. Students can study in the other school from one month to a semester. Mrs. Dakshayini Kanna, Director of Treamis World School closed the workshop with the remark “A true global learning environment will be achieved when the students in India and abroad work jointly on research projects”. # # # Treamis World School provides uninterrupted education for children of relocating parents.
