Free Email Encryption Software ‘eCipher’ Addresses Nevada Revised Statute 597.970

Essential Security Software recently revealed that eCipher® addresses certain key elements of Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 597.970. This new law requires that businesses encrypt their customer’s personal data that is sent electronically.

PRLog (Press Release)Jun 26, 2008 – Essential Security Software recently revealed that eCipher®, the next generation of email encryption software, addresses certain key elements of Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 597.970.  This new law requires that businesses encrypt their customer’s personal data that is sent electronically.  eCipher achieves this by protecting business email communications, securely encrypting messages and file attachments.

Nevada Revised Statute 597.970 states that beginning October 1, 2008, all Nevada businesses must encrypt any electronically transmitted personal customer data, with the exception of facsimiles.  

NRS 597.970 may severely hamper Nevada businesses, limiting their ability to communicate via email.  eCipher, the easy to use email encryption program, allows Nevada businesses to comply with elements of NRS 597.970 related to sending personal customer data via email.

Specifically, NRS 597.970 reads:

A business in this State shall not transfer any personal information of a customer through an electronic transmission other than a facsimile to a person outside of the secure system of the business unless the business uses encryption to ensure the security of electronic transmission.

NRS 597.970 defines personal data as:
“a natural person’s first name or first initial and last name in combination with any one or more of the following data elements, when the name and data elements are not encrypted:
     1.  Social security number.
     2.  Driver’s license number or identification card number.
     3.  Account number, credit card number or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code or password that would permit access to the person’s financial account.”

This version of eCipher enables the recipient to read and send encrypted email, protecting both the email messages and attachments. This provides businesses with the capability to easily exchange secure communications.  eCipher is perfectly suited for industries where secure communications are critical, such as email communications with legal counsel, medical practitioners, financial counselors, partners and colleagues.  The current beta version does not support encryption from multiple email accounts; this feature is currently in development.  

eCipher offers RSA 2048 bit and AES 256 encryption, user ID verification and additional usage protections to ensure that e-mails containing sensitive business and client information comply with HIPAA, SOX and other data safeguard legislation.
