June 24, 2008 - PRLog -- China's Sichuan Province is hit by a “great quake”. The death toll from the devastating 8.0-magnitude earthquake in Sichuan Province increased to 69,019.  373,573 people were injured and 18,627 others are still missing. 45.55 million people were affected by the quake, of whom 15.15 million had been relocated.

Cyclone Nargis hitting Myanmar which now has an official death toll at 78000 people with another 56000 missing. An estimated 2.4 million people remain homeless and hungry.

How does this effect the rest of the world? More specifically those of us living in the United States and Canada?

On May 22nd the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) predicts that a magnitude 7.8 earthquake along the San Andreas Fault would have devastating consequences for Southern California, including the deaths of 1,800 people and damages costing around 200 billion U.S. dollars, according to a USGS study.

The study said the earthquake would rattle 10 million residents, about 50,000 of whom would be injured. Older buildings that are not retrofitted would be destroyed and result in 33 billion dollars in damages.

The April 18 earthquake in Illinois, measuring a 5.2 magnitude and felt in parts of 16 states, has alerted the curiosity of seismologists because it did not originate on the notorious and much-feared New Madrid fault in Missouri.

The fact is we live on an ever-changing planet. Fortunately, for those who live in areas of tornados, hurricanes/cyclones NOAA, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is able to predict the paths and potential destruction. But, unfortunately this does not help the people in countries where such news and information is not readily available.

Earthquake prediction is not a reality as of yet, but hopefully soon scientist will be able to make predictions of the location and potential damage.

Therefore, preparation is the key to survival.

Both FEMA and The Red Cross offer a wealth of information but to some the chore of preparation is confusing and tedious. Know what to purchase and in what quantity can be tricky.

Online stores such as www.survivalkitsonline.com  are becoming more popular, but not all 72 hour Survival Kits and Emergency Disaster Supplies look alike.
That is why Survival Kits Online has launched an online chat system which enables customers to ask questions and gather information in real time. Questions such as “What should I purchase for a family of four” are very common.

Live operators are available at www.survivalkitsonline.com to help sort through the specific questions and give expert advice. The trend for preparedness is increasing, as it should. It has been proven that preparedness does save lives.
